Give stations a skill
A skill is a folder with a SKILL.md, defined for a team and given to
stations. You need the team's configuration in Terraform. If your factory
isn't in Terraform yet, make the factory
yours first.
Write the skill
Make a folder for the skill beside the configuration, such as
skills/core/grafana/, and write its SKILL.md. It opens with frontmatter
giving the skill's name and a description, and its body holds the
instructions:
---
name: grafana
description: Look up dashboards
---
Search before you guess.The name is the key stations give the skill by: lowercase words joined by
dashes, not starting with spotlight-.
If the skill uses integration tools, list them in the frontmatter. A station with this skill also gets these tools:
---
name: grafana
description: Look up dashboards
tools:
- grafana.search
---If the skill needs a secret, name it under secrets with what it is for. A
station leaves the skill out of its runs until the workspace holds a secret by
that name:
---
name: grafana
description: Look up dashboards
secrets:
GRAFANA_TOKEN: Read-only token its tools use
---Add any other files the agent should have, such as queries or examples, within the skill's file limits.
Define it for the team
Add a spotlight_skill resource that reads each file of the folder, by its path
within the folder:
resource "spotlight_skill" "core_grafana" {
team_id = spotlight_team.core.id
key = "grafana"
files = {
"SKILL.md" = file("${path.module}/skills/core/grafana/SKILL.md")
"queries/latency.promql" = file("${path.module}/skills/core/grafana/queries/latency.promql")
}
}The key must be the name in SKILL.md.
Give it to stations
Add the skill's key to the skills of each station whose agent should have it,
in the line's spotlight_line resource:
station {
key = "implementation"
name = "Implementation"
harness = "claude-code"
skills = [spotlight_skill.core_grafana.key]
passes_to = ["code-review"]
}Run terraform apply.
The skill appears in Settings, on the team's Skills page, and on the Station page of each station that gives it.
Give a catalog skill
Spotlight also offers skills of its own in a catalog. Name one in a station's
skills by its name and version, as catalog.<name>@<version>:
skills = ["catalog.research@1.0.0"]What a station gives lists the
catalog skills. Which of them a station may give depends on the workspace's
plan. If the plan does not include the skill, Terraform refuses the station's
skills and says so.
